Even though our blog has been quiet for a while, many exciting things have happened in the last months.
For example, we have relocated to a new office in Goes (The Netherlands). At this new location we now have the facility to set up our own green screen recording studio as well as a motion tracking system for our developments in Virtual Reality (VR).
The first innovations have already been realized, such as the VR-Video setup, which is a combination of VR and video projection. Check out these videos:
Besides our progress in the innovative use of new technologies, several other new developments are taking place at the moment. We are excited to tell you more about this as soon as we can, so please stay tuned.
More to come!
All the best.
The NuFormer Team
23 Dec 2013
2013 was a great year for NuFormer, a year where we worked on amazing new projects, innovative concepts and had the honor of receiving a number of great awards. An overview of 2013, our year of firsts:
Firsts in projects
For the Aqua Bella show that premiered at the Dolfinarium last April, we had three firsts; the first projection we produced for a theme park, the first permanent show we produced and the first time that our MD Rob Delfgaauw designed a custom large scale projection screen.
Another great project (and two firsts!) we executed was Philips´ new brand positioning reveal with shows taking place in two different countries on the same date, Amsterdam and São Paulo. It was also the first time that we used interactivity via a tracking device like Kinect to project interactivity onto the huge façades of the two buildings.
Firsts in development and innovation
Earlier this year we opened the NuLab, where we let our creative juices flow and work on development of new and exciting projects and innovations. We built a green key studio and are continuously testing new hardware and software like the Oculus Rift, Leap Motion and Kinect 2, for which we are part of the Windows developer kit program.
We also worked on a new form of projection media called Interactive Window Projection, which tracks moving objects and people in front of a screen or window to create exciting interaction.
Firsts in awards
This year we were honored to receive the Bronze BassAward in the category “Best Mapping” for our Mocap Mapping projection and an honorable mention for “De Zeeuwse Pioniersprijs”, a prize for local entrepreneurs and companies. But we are most proud of the prestigious IAAPA Brass Ring award the Dolfinarium’s Aqua Bella show won for Overall Production. A great achievement!
This summer we worked on a huge American production for a TV show that will air early 2014. Our contribution was meant to stay unrevealed until after the launch, but if you have the opportunity to watch US television and pay really close attention to what is happening on (American) TV this coming year, you might recognize some of the creative visual magic that we produced for this show.
Besides the Dolfinarium project we also worked on another innovative concept in the world of theme parks. Because work is still in progress we cannot share too many details but what we can share is that it is something totally different than what you are used to expect from us. As always, we will definitely keep you updated on future developments!
What to expect in 2014 – Rob Delfgaauw / Managing Director
The coming year will be one of developments of brand new technologies and innovations. Most of them are related to projection technology as you can expect from us. But there will be also some innovations that we expect to trigger quite some international media channels, eager to publish about these innovations as soon as possible.
As soon as we can we will update you all about these next steps in our progress.
3D video mapping projections in the beginning of the new year will mainly be performed in the US. Permanent and semi-permanent video mapping installations are more and more requested for by major brands and organizations worldwide. Obvious that NuFormer is asked for these new projects as we have the skills, the talents and the experience to deliver turnkey solutions all over the world. And we are happy to do so.
For 2014 I also expect NuFormer to expand due to more volume and diversity in its products. More talented artists, especially in the field of 3D modeling and animation, are required and will be an important factor when talking about crew/team substance. Maybe we will even be ‘forced’ to look for a new office where a larger number of employees can be accommodated and where, attached and part of the building, we will have the availability of a studio for experimenting with and development of new technologies. That would be great and of course we will let you all know as soon as there are some updates about that.
I wish everybody a Merry Christmas and lots of love, prosperity and good fortune in 2014.
16 Nov 2013
Amsterdam, November 13, 2013. Philips revealed its new logo to all its employees and press worldwide with a spectacular 3D video mapping show projected on the massive façade of the headquarter building. The mapping projection was produced and performed by NuFormer. The reveal in Amsterdam was streamed live and virtually attended by between 20.000 and 30.000 Philips employees worldwide. Some hours after the reveal show in Amsterdam NuFormer performed the same projection, although somewhat modified for the Brazilian market, in São Paulo, Brazil.
The reveal event was swiftly picked up by the press and other media. Our crew working on the show in São Paulo watched the coverage on the Dutch 8 o’clock news even before they went live with their Brazilian reveal! That news item can be viewed here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N907VPVILVQ.
Rob Delfgaauw, managing director: “NuFormer is a Netherlands based company. Executing this show for Philips makes us feel extra proud and honored to be connected and involved in such a unique event for this major Dutch brand. The projection itself was awesome, a great result of working close together with all related parties such as Fleischman, Ogilvy New York and the Philips team. And of course many other companies that contributed with their own expertise and skills. It was great to see at the end how all these collaborations have turned into an excellent and successful event”.
As part of its new brand positioning Philips presented a new design of its well-known shield and introduced the brand line “innovation and you” for the first time, visualized in the video mapping projection on the façade of the head office in Amsterdam. Philips’ new brand line “innovation and you” is rooted in its belief that innovation is only meaningful if it delivers on peoples unmet needs and desires. The re-designed shield is updated to better suit digital media and mobile channels.
Coen Deurloo, Multimedia Designer: “It is always a treat to see our ideas and creations come to life on a building after working on it for such a long time. I have worked on the opening scene for instance, in which you see various people using innovations made by Philips. We had to record all those shots in one day, which was quite a challenge. Because they’re all silhouettes, the actors had to exaggerate their movements a bit to make clear what kind of products they were using. The final result looked very good on the huge canvas”.
Before and after the big reveal Philips’ employees and other attendees were able to interact via Kinect with several staple Philips products and the building. And there is no better way than an interactive 3D video mapping to bring the brand line “innovation and you” to life!
John Buise, manager multimedia: “As soon as it was clear that we were commissioned to create a full scale interactive projection on the Philips head office we were very excited. It was our mission to let people “touch” the projection, and play with some of the well-known Philips products, while audio responsive visuals were running in the background. The biggest challenge was to actually create the kind of content that makes sense – combining VJ show with interactive elements that people could understand”.
At NuFormer, an extended team worked for weeks on creating the creative content for the big reveal and the interactive part of show. Our trainee Joost was connected to the interactive team as well, he worked on this project during the entire process from the testing phase to the execution on site in Amsterdam: “We first developed some tests to explore the possibilities when using the Kinect to create an abstract representation of the person who triggered several product-related effects in the projection. The most challenging part of the project was to convert the characteristic functions of the products into simple interactive visuals that users could understand and trigger. Besides this interactivity we also created different audio responsive visuals that transformed the building into a huge VJ canvas. It enabled us to amplify the music whenever we wanted with different colors, animations and 3D effects. This project made us discover new ways to create a unique user experience using interactive video mapping. For me as trainee I couldn’t wish for a better experience, I learned a lot in a short and fascinating period”.
The production time for the creation of all the projection content and the development of the interaction was nearly 7 weeks. This is a tight time frame for such a project, especially with a second location to operate on the other side of the world. The NuFormer team was extended with Alain and Auke, excellent 3D artists. In total a crew of 10 worked dedicated on the content production. In the last phase of the production the team even had to work overtime to make sure everything was ready in time and at the highest quality level as usual. But the final result was awesome which gives us such a great satisfaction and motivation. It was great. And so was the work of Natascha, senior project manager. Right from the start of this production she was on top of everything and maintained a helicopter view. For Amsterdam as well as São Paulo Natascha had everything under control. Communication and organization were handled very efficiently which was very important seen the available timeframe. A job well done.
Rob Delfgaauw, managing director: “The team has done a great job in such a short time. I am impressed every time again to see how they use their skills and their talents but also take their responsibilities to create and develop this beautiful projection mapping content and the advanced interactivity. NuFormer team, thank you all for the excellent work!”.
